Three Generations on the Same Ground
Huntsville Superior Concrete started in 1957 with one mixer and a Ford. Huntsville was filling up with engineers faster than anyone could build houses for them, and every one of those ranch houses going up south of town needed a driveway and a carport slab. Ray Colvin's grandfather poured them one at a time, by hand, with a wood float.
Ray's father ran the company through the eighties and nineties. Ray took over the schedule book in 2004 and still walks most estimates himself. He is a finisher who ended up running a business, not a salesman, and it shows in how the quotes read.
The city has changed beyond recognition since 1957 — Huntsville passed Birmingham to become the largest city in Alabama, and there are now more than 233,000 people here. The equipment has changed too. Six trucks, a skid steer, a mini excavator, two ride-on power trowels.
The clay under it all has not changed at all. That is most of why being here that long is worth something.

How We Work, and Where That Differs
We Pour 5 Inches, Not 4
ACI allows 4 inches on a residential driveway and plenty of crews here pour exactly that. The clay under Madison County swells wet and shrinks dry, and 4 inches has almost no reserve to bridge a soft spot. The fifth inch is about 12% more concrete and roughly double the stiffness.
The Specs Are on the Quote
Thickness, PSI, air entrainment, rebar size and spacing, base depth, joint plan and cure dates — written down before the pour. If a competing bid is cheaper, that page usually tells you exactly where the money went.
No Water at the Chute
Slump leaves the truck at 4 to 5 inches and stays there. Adding water makes the concrete easier to place and trades away compressive strength permanently. It is the single most common way a good pour quietly becomes a mediocre one.
We Say When Repair Beats Replacement
A settled but sound slab gets lifted with polyurethane at $650 to $2,400 rather than torn out at $9 to $13 a square foot. That is the smaller invoice and it is frequently the right answer. We would rather do the honest job twice than the wrong job once.
We Turn Work Down
Slab settling over a suspected void and we will tell you to get the ground looked at first. A February pour with two nights below freezing in the forecast and we will say no — a slab that freezes before it sets never develops a durable surface. Small jobs are not on that list. There is no minimum here — a patch, a single step or one pad is a job, and if somebody else has told you otherwise, call us.
Hairline Cracks Are Not Warranted
All concrete cracks. What a contractor controls is where, which is what control joints are for. We put that in writing before the pour rather than have the conversation at month six. Two years on workmanship, five on structural work.
What 69 Years Here Actually Buys You
Local experience is a phrase every contractor uses. Here is the version with content in it. This valley has shrink-swell clay over limestone karst, more than 54 inches of rain a year, and only 2.4 inches of snow — which means people underrate freeze damage and over-rate the need for de-icer.
Madison County has caves and voids in the bedrock, so a slab that drops in one sharp corner while the rest stays flat is a different problem from one that settles uniformly. Brand-new subdivisions around Madison and west Huntsville sit on fill that is still consolidating. Out toward Brownsboro the Flint River floods, so drainage is designed before finishes are picked. Down in Decatur the ground sits at 594 feet next to the Tennessee River and drains slower than anywhere else we work.
Knowing which of those you are standing on before you quote is the entire difference between a driveway that lasts twenty years and one that fails at year three. It is not something you learn from a spec sheet.
